Mengyu Liao, a Ph.D. candidate under the supervision of Dr. Taylor Oshan in the Center for Geospatial Information Science, recently received first place in the John Odland Student Paper Competition, organized by the Spatial Analysis and Modeling Specialty Group at the 2025 American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting.
Her paper, titled “A data-driven approach to spatial interaction models of migration: The case of competing destinations and intervening opportunities,” proposes a data-driven framework for migration modeling that improves the ability to recover anticipated migration relationships and reveals the distinct spatial structures from both origin and destination perspectives. The paper was recently published in Geographical Analysis and is available at: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/gean.70001.
