The CGIS is sad to share the news of the passing of Dr. Derek Thompson on February 21, 2025. Dr. Thompson was a respected researcher in the field of GIS from its early days, and co-author of the well-known textbook, Fundamentals of Information Systems, that most GIS researchers had on their shelves. We are proud of Dr. Thompson’s connections to the Department of Geographical Sciences and the University of Maryland and acknowledge his important contributions to our field.
