Title: "MSGIS Alumni Talk: A GIS Professional’s Journey" 
 

Abstract: 

Will discuss navigating the job market as a new grad and my career path to my current position. I’ll also be talking about some of the work we are doing at the Fire Department, the challenges we’ve had to overcome, and how GIS professionals have evolved from map makers to data creators and managers. I’ll provide some suggestions for new grads of what I look for when hiring new analysts and why new grads should look at opportunities in government to start their careers.

 

Speaker Bio:

Andrew Newell is a 2014 graduate of the MSGIS program and works as a Senior GIS Project Manager for the Philadelphia Fire Department running their GIS & Analytics Unit. He has worked for the City of Philadelphia in various roles and departments as well as the private sector. He is currently pursuing his MBA from the University of Illinois and is a 2023 ESRI Special Achievement in GIS award winner.
